Dream Sphere

An app that targets all-day relaxation and pre-bed routines, leading to an overall improvement in sleep quality.

01

Problem Statement

More than 70 percent of college students say they get less than eight hours of sleep a day. I’m interested in this problem because I have found that problems with getting enough quantity/quality of sleep and falling asleep have been one of the most common reported stresses among my networks. I too struggle with getting enough sleep on school days so it interest me to dive deeper into this space.

02

Research

Takeaways

  • Socializing is the fourth biggest contributor, which was a surprising finding.

  • Privacy concerns of sound detection for sleep app. Ex: Conversation and home sound might be recorded and store.

  • 73.91% of the respondent feel poorly rested after waking up.

  • Evening exercise helps individual fall asleep faster and spend more time in deep sleep.

  • Three out of the four respondent who have used a sleep app find it to be unhelpful.

  • Participation in healthy sleep programs improves the quality and quantity of sleep of adult participants.

  • One respondent report that the sleep tracking feature creates anxiety when the sleeping time doesn’t match expectations.

  • Stress levels showed a significant decrease, suggesting that improved sleep can help individuals better manage life challenges.

Heuristic Evaluation

Better Sleep

Issues:

  • The page is too bright for sleep tracking at night, can disrupt sleep.

  • The connection of the different music is not clear since the straight line doesn’t relate to each other can be confusing.

Working Well:

  • The music page is easy to access when sleeping, but it also locks the screen reducing distractions.

  • Good illustration and imagery showing the type of music available.

  • Different objective is layout so user can quickly utilize the resources in a effective manner.

Sleep Watch

Issues:

  • The calendar can have more function like a graph showing the quality of sleep throughout time.

  • The thin line creates visual discomfort due to the little detail distracting from the main information.

  • Ads are big and can be distracting when the user is attempting to go to sleep.

Research Questions

“How can we alleviate the stress from school work and complicated social life before bed to better improve the quality of sleep?”

“How can we improve the sleeping environment of individuals in order to reduce the amount of time needed to fall asleep?”

“How can we use technology to improve sleep and not let it interfere/ disrupt pre-bed habits?”

05

Persona

Two persona, one focusing on general stress on sleep and the second focusing on procrastination and schoolwork on sleep.

06

Journey Map

Two Journey Map, one focusing on the timeframe right before bed, the other focusing on the whole entire day leading up to bedtime.

Test Guide/Feedback

VS

Question “Which survey section layout do you prefer, and why?”

Answer “I prefer the second option (where the survey section is separated from the recommended content) because it suggests a loading time before the recommended music or meditation is generated.”

Observation The user had difficulty navigating from time management to the relaxation page.

Takeaways

  • The UX process needs to be cohesive, so it's important that each step builds on the results of the previous ones.

  • Synthesizing research early and eliminating irrelevant information is crucial when creating a solution that directly addresses the problem

If I could take this project further…

Finish developing the time management feature of the app and evaluate students' reactions to a sleep app that requires daily use rather than just nighttime interaction.Develop the sleep section further, and conduct more research on implementing personalized suggestions. (e.g., integration with smart home devices?)
